How I changed note-taking in my classroom for the better.
Ever feel like students dread recording notes in science class? If so, it’s time to rethink the way students record and interact with content! I’m going to share with you 3 key ways to change your note taking routine and how adding Science Doodle Notes will engage your students in the process.
Here are three ways to OVERHAUL the way you have students take notes in science class.
- Stop having kids write the definitions. Just stop! Instead, have kids USE and apply definitions with meaningful practice tasks.
- Spend less time taking notes and more time interacting with notes. So often teachers (I was one of them) have students take notes and then move on. We sometimes never looked back and talked about HOW TO STUDY using the notes! Take the time. It works!
- Step outside your comfort zone. Draw, label, color and think alongside and out loud with your students during notes time. A document camera is way more captivating than clicking through PowerPoints!
I recommend easing into new note-taking methods. Pick one or two topics in your first unit to change up and see how it goes. Also recognize that new things take time to master. Your first time using a new strategy is going to require some grace. Pre-made doodle notes make the process much easier for both the teacher and the students.
